How to Calculate Your NEET Score With Negative Marking

Calculate a NEET practice or provisional score using the +4/−1 formula, with worked examples, audit steps, and decision rules for uncertain attempts.

Negative marking is simple enough to state and easy to misapply under pressure. Under a +4 for correct, −1 for incorrect, and 0 for unattempted scheme, one wrong response changes the score by five marks compared with turning that same response from wrong to correct: the −1 disappears and +4 is added. That five-mark correction effect is not the same as saying every wrong answer “costs five”; relative to leaving it blank, a wrong answer costs one mark.

The method below is for auditing mocks, an OMR response against a provisional or final key, or a manually entered practice session. Always check the dated NTA bulletin and notices for the examination you are discussing; the official scheme and official result control. A self-calculated score is provisional when challenges, key changes, recorded-response issues, or authority decisions are still unresolved.

Start with the scoring equation

Let C be the number of correct responses and I the number of incorrect responses. With the stated scheme, total score S = 4C − I. Unattempted responses contribute zero, so they do not appear in the score equation. If a test has Q questions, then unattempted U = Q − C − I, provided every response has been classified exactly once.

Use a second equation to check your counting: attempted A = C + I. Then confirm A + U = Q. This reconciliation catches a common spreadsheet error in which a doubtful response is counted as both incorrect and unattempted. Keep any cancelled, dropped, or specially treated question in a separate status until the authority’s rule tells you how it should be scored.

  • Score: S = 4C − I.
  • Attempted: A = C + I.
  • Unattempted: U = Q − C − I.
  • Attempt accuracy: 100 × C ÷ A, when A is not zero.

Worked example: calculate, then reconcile

Assume a practice paper contains 180 questions. You classify 142 as correct, 22 as incorrect, and 16 as unattempted. The positive component is 4 × 142 = 568. The negative component is 1 × 22 = 22. Therefore S = 568 − 22 = 546. The count check is 142 + 22 + 16 = 180, so every question has one status.

The attempted count is 164. Accuracy among attempted questions is 100 × 142 ÷ 164 = 86.59 percent, rounded to two decimals. That percentage is a diagnostic, not an NTA percentile. It tells you how often your attempts were correct in this paper; it says nothing by itself about the national candidate distribution or AIR.

Understand the marginal effect of an answer

Compare three states for one ordinary question under +4/−1/0. Blank contributes 0. Wrong contributes −1, so changing blank to wrong moves the total down by one. Correct contributes +4, so changing blank to correct moves it up by four. Correcting an already wrong classification moves the score by +5. Erasing a wrong attempt and leaving it blank, where response rules permit before submission, moves it by +1.

This makes blind score chasing a poor strategy. The decision to attempt should be based on evidence from option elimination and your calibrated accuracy, not on a slogan such as “attempt everything.” In review, group wrong answers into knowledge gaps, reading errors, calculation errors, and unsupported guesses. The same −1 on the scorecard can require very different remediation.

A transparent break-even model for uncertain attempts

For a simplified decision model, let p be your probability of being correct on a question and assume the only outcomes are +4 or −1. Expected marks = 4p − 1(1 − p) = 5p − 1. The break-even point is 5p − 1 = 0, so p = 0.20, or 20 percent. Above 20 percent the mathematical expectation is positive; below it the expectation is negative.

That equation is not an instruction to make random attempts. Your estimated p may be poorly calibrated, exam stress creates correlated mistakes, and the actual response and question-treatment rules still apply. Use the model retrospectively: label confidence before checking a mock, then calculate accuracy within high-, medium-, and low-confidence groups. Only repeated results can show whether your confidence labels mean anything.

Audit an OMR or response sheet safely

Create one row per question with columns for subject, your recorded option, key option, status, and notes. Compare against the correct dated key version. Count C and I with formulas rather than mental arithmetic, and keep blanks explicit. If a provisional key is under challenge, preserve both scenarios: score under the published key and score if the disputed answer changes. Do not present the second scenario as an official score.

After the final key or result is released, archive the source file and repeat the calculation only if you need to understand a discrepancy. The official NTA result remains authoritative. If your manual total differs, first check transcription, booklet or code alignment, and whether you used the right key; then follow the official grievance or notice route if one is available. A third-party calculator cannot amend the record.

  • Use one mutually exclusive status per question.
  • Record the key version and access date.
  • Keep disputed-key scenarios visibly separate.
  • Do not call a mock or provisional-key total an official result.

Turn the calculation into a study decision

Total score alone hides the cause. Add positive marks = 4C and negative marks = I to your review. If positive marks rise while negatives remain stable, coverage may be improving. If attempts rise but the negative component grows faster, tighten your attempt rule. If score is flat while unattempted questions fall, inspect whether newly attempted questions are replacing blanks with correct responses or merely adding penalties.

Use a three-test rolling comparison only across papers with similar scope and conditions. Log C, I, U, score, accuracy, and minutes used by subject. The goal is not to manufacture a predicted rank from every mock; it is to identify an observable change you can act on in the next revision cycle.
