The official paper at a glance
The subject split matters because it defines the score ceiling and the workload. Physics has 45 questions, Chemistry has 45, and Biology, covering Botany and Zoology, has 90. At four marks for every correct response, their maximum marks are 180, 180 and 360 respectively. All 180 questions are compulsory under the published 2026 scheme, and the test duration is three hours. There is therefore no Section B choice to build a strategy around.
The bulletin describes NEET UG 2026 as a single-day, single-shift examination in pen-and-paper mode. That point should change how a candidate practises: a screen-only mock does not reproduce booklet navigation, rough-work placement, physical bubbling or the possibility of a mismatch between booklet and answer sheet. Use digital practice for volume if convenient, but schedule full paper simulations with a printed booklet and a separate response grid.

Marking rules and the cost of a guess
The standard marking rule is +4 for the correct or most appropriate answer, -1 for an incorrect option, and 0 for an unanswered question. A wrong answer therefore creates a five-mark swing relative to getting that same item right. This does not mean never attempt a doubtful question. It means the decision should depend on evidence: a solved result or a confident elimination is different from choosing an option because it looks familiar.
Use a simple expected-value check in practice. If your probability of being correct is p, the expected mark under +4/-1 is 4p minus 1 times the probability of being wrong, which simplifies to 5p - 1. The break-even probability is 0.20. That mathematical threshold is not a command to attempt every question: your self-estimated probability may be poorly calibrated, and a rushed guess can also consume time or trigger an OMR error. Track outcomes by confidence band across mocks before adopting a guessing rule.

A three-pass timing model
A workable first pass protects easy marks. Move through your chosen subject order and answer items that can be completed without a prolonged search. If a Physics calculation is not set up after roughly a minute, or a Biology statement is still ambiguous after rereading, place a visible review mark in the booklet and continue. The objective is not to hit a universal split by the clock; it is to prevent one difficult cluster from hiding straightforward questions later in the paper.
The second pass is for questions where one more derivation, comparison or elimination can change the decision. The final pass is reserved for unresolved responses, serial-number checks and OMR completion. Decide your subject order from evidence: compare at least three full mocks using the same order, then retain the version that produces the lowest combination of unvisited questions, late bubbling and avoidable errors. Changing the order on exam day because of one intimidating opening page adds risk without evidence.

Build an OMR workflow before the exam
There are three common practice workflows: bubble after every question, bubble after a small block, or transfer a large set near the end. The last option concentrates too much clerical work into the most pressured minutes. Bubbling every question minimizes backlog but interrupts problem-solving frequently. A small fixed block, such as one page or five questions, is often a practical compromise, provided the candidate has tested it repeatedly under timed conditions.
Whatever block size you use, anchor every transfer to the printed question number. Point to the booklet number, say the option mentally, find the same row on the response grid, fill it, then return to the next booklet item. Never recover from an interruption by assuming the next blank row matches the next question. Restart from an explicit number. In mocks, record OMR errors separately from conceptual errors because the remedy is a transfer protocol, not more chapter revision.

How to review without changing correct answers impulsively
A review pass should apply a higher bar to changing an answer than to checking it. Change a response only when you identify a concrete reason: a sign error, a missed qualifier, a recalled NCERT line, a unit mismatch, or a calculation that now resolves differently. Mere discomfort is not new evidence. Mark the relevant word or computation in the booklet so the reason for a change is inspectable rather than emotional.
Separate review marks by type. One symbol can mean calculation unfinished; another can mean two options remain; a third can flag an OMR check. This prevents rereading every doubtful question from zero. During mock analysis, calculate how many changed answers moved from wrong to right and from right to wrong. If unreasoned changes are net negative, the corrective rule is simple: no change without articulable evidence.

Turn the pattern into weekly practice
For chapter practice, score every set with the official +4/-1/0 rule rather than reporting accuracy alone. A set with 34 correct, 6 wrong and 5 unattempted scores 130, because 34 times 4 is 136 and six negative marks reduce it to 130. Also log time, unanswered count and error type. The same score can reflect very different problems: weak recall, slow calculations, careless reading or poor attempt selection.
Add full-length pen-and-paper mocks only when they lead to analysis. Within a day of each mock, classify every lost mark as knowledge gap, application gap, reading error, calculation error, response-transfer error or time decision. Pick the two largest correctable categories and design the next week's drills around them. Pattern familiarity is useful only when it produces a repeatable process under the official constraints.
